[attr="class","mouths1"] “Come on Mattie, I can’t just sit here”, Lena pouted, as she tightened her skates over her feet, hoping from the snow without so much as a thought to brush the snow from her butt, excitement glimmering in her eyes the moment she saw the snow touch the ground. To her, skating and snow was just like Denmark, and she’d pulled at Mattie’s sleeves, itching to go play since it had touched down.
The inside of the ice skating rink was decked out in various assortments of bells and reds and greens, clippings of Christmas art and a large tree in the center of the rink. The rest of the city was decked out in mistletoe and red ribbons, for those who were interested in celebrating the holiday that was soon to come; it was the season of peppermint mochas and seasonal pastries galore! Mattie on the other hand was still mourning the bitter loss of his beloved pumpkin spice, for in his eyes it was gone far too soon. Yet, if they’d made it anything other than seasonal, Mattie felt it might’ve lost its charm. The only holiday he could actually tolerate was Halloween, and certainly not Christmas. Call the Dane a humbug all you wanted to. Mattie found himself sitting on the side, hands stuffed in his pockets watching Lena run out into skating rink, before disappearing in a purple and yellow blur, to account for her jacket and hair. Mattie couldn’t just run out onto the ice to chase for her either, he'd be smacked by skaters going left and right.
The Dane reached down, lacing the skates over his feet and tightening them. Mattie hadn’t been skating in years, the idea of it was almost foreign to him now, but surely he could remember a thing or two from a childhood in Denmark spent skating around and fantasizing about pushing an overly arrogant fourteen year old Lukas into the potholes of the lake. Well, the arrogant part hadn’t changed, and Mattie still would’ve loved to give Lukas a shove or two, but that was besides the point.
Mattie slid onto the ice, slipping and sliding across the surface as he grasped for traction. Mattie clung to the wall for his life, before he soaked his leather jacket and red muffler with melted dirty ice. How was he ever going to find Lena in this holly jolly mess everyone had put up if he couldn't even stand up straight?!
